Our first stop on day 2 was Oberlin, OH (to pick up some swag for Ms. Wallace). It is an awesome town, with an adorable downtown area. After a stop at the Oberlin College bookstore, we ordered takeout from The Feve. It was a perfect lunch recommendation – habanero rangoon, buffalo chicken salad, falafel pita, and tots with dipping sauces. We picnicked in Tappan Square and were both very full, and very happy. It was gorgeous day, cool breeze for the pups; no albino squirrel sightings, maybe next time!
Next up Toledo, OH – home of the JEEP ASSEMBLY COMPLEX. It is a high-security area, no tours, no visitors, but Margaret got a couple photos out front.
We arrived in South Bend, IN this evening and stopped at Whole Foods for the salad bar and some local beer. After finding no cold beer to drink with dinner, I learned that there is an Indiana law barring cold sales at grocery and convenience stores. The internet tells me there is quite a debate about this.
One thing we both noticed during our drive was the prevalence of manufacturing, most evident in the many plants and the trucks carrying those goods across the country. The impact and importance of these businesses on the local economy is clear. It was a good reminder to buy American made products. As we stopped at a traffic light in South Bend, we noticed all the cars around us were American made, very different from a typical drive in Boston.
Jeep Wave count is up to 6 – its tough on the highway, but we have gotten a few on our rides through town.
